Food City was opened in Tennessee from Greensboro in 1918, but the initial official K-VA-T Food Stores was founded in 1955 by the founder Jack C. Smith – father Curtis and uncle Earl – Grundy opened the first store in Virginia. Over time, Food City Virginia Piggy Wiggly and Eastern Kentucky were created as a result of the purchase of Piggly Wiggly, Quality Foods / Food City, White Shops, Winn Dixie and BI-LO units in Tennessee. The company has steadily grown in new market areas through the expansion of new premises to replace and replace the best services for customers.

K-VA-T Food Stores is privately owned and privately owned by private employees (only 13% through ESOP) in Abingdon, Virginia. From August 2017, K-VA-T has 131 retail restaurants (121 Food City Stores, 10 Super Dollar Stores, 5 Convenience Stores and 2 Liquor Stores (Food City Wine & Spirits)) Georgia, Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. The chain has 100 stores and 87 fuel stations.
